2. PROJECT TITLE
IMPARTING SECONDARY STUDENTS WITH EDUCATION ON HOW TO PREPARE AND PLANT TREES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION IN KWIMBA DISTRICT

 3. PROJECT PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES
1.1 PROJECT PURPOSE
The purpose of the project is to equip secondary students with the knowledge, skills and attitude on how to prepare and plant trees for environmental conservation.

1.2 SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
Provision of seminars to 600 students on how to prepare seedling, to plant trees on the farm and the importance of planting trees for one year in which all seminars will take a total of 120 hours, that is 12 hours in each school.

To train 600 secondary students on how to prepare the seedlings on nurseries for 9 months this will take 20 hours in each school.

To train 600 secondary students on how to prepare the farm and plant seedlings on the farm for three months, this will take 15 hours in each school.

To train 600 secondary students on how to care and conserve trees for two years will take 800 hours in each school.

4. PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project is all about giving education to secondary school students on how to prepare and plant trees for the purpose of conserving the environment. The project will mainly focus on providing education of planting trees for environmental conservation.

The project will involve all secondary schools in Kwimba district in which 60 students from each school will be given education on how trees are important for the environmental conservation. Students will be trained on how to prepare seedlings on nurseries and how to plant them.
The project will also provide every student concerned with an opportunity to acquire knowledge, values, attitude, commitment and skills needed to protect and improve environment.
The project will be done in three phases. Phase one will involve the provision of seminars on how to prepare seedlings and nurseries, and how to plant and conserve trees and their general importance for environmental conservation. Also, survey and preparation of water sources, and identification of field schools will be done.

Phase two will involve practical training 600 students through demonstration on how to prepare seeds, seedlings and nurseries; and planting trees.

Phase three will involve practical training 600 students of secondary students, 60 in each of the ten schools on caring the planted trees, evaluation of the project and reporting the project to the office of the vice president, environmental conservation department.

The project implementation will be funded 100% by the government through the office of vice president, the environmental department.

5. PROBLEM ANALYSIS
There is perishing of trees or forests in Kwimba district. This has led to shortage of rains as there are no trees to induce rain. This has led to unpredictable rains with recurrent droughts (especially in current years), severely soil erosion; drop in agricultural productivity and water shortage.

Kwimba district is found in Mwanza region as the most environmentally disadvantaged area of Mwanza region. The district has two well-defined wet and dry seasons, (Wella et al 1994). Rainfall tends to be scanty, patch and reliable with mean annual rainfall of 800 mm (URT 1997). The dry season is both dry and windy. The district has been facing environmental problems including cutting down trees without replacing others.

The reason for disappearance of forests species are due to deforestation, overgrazing or overstocking which lead to drought and shortage of water. This is due to absence of sufficient environmental education to the community so as to resolve the problem.

Therefore, the project intends to provide education on how to prepare and plant trees for environmental conservation.

6.  ACTIVITIES
In this project, activities will be conducted into three phases which. In each phase there will be specific activities to be done within the given time.

PHASE ONE
6.1  This phase aims to provide seminars to 60 students in each of the ten selected secondary schools’ students on how to prepare seedlings, planting trees on the farm and the importance of planting trees for environmental conservation. The seminars will be theoretical oriented within the given time of period. Also, survey for identification of water field schools area (shamba darasa) and preparation of water sources if needed will be done in this phase.
The phase will comprise two major stages with duration of one year. Stage one will involve the provision of seminars which will not exceed six months to ten selected secondary schools’ students. Stage two will involve surveying and preparation of water sources and identification of field school areas will be conducted, also it will not exceed six months to those selected schools.

6.1.1 Activity one; in this phase will involve the provision of seminar. Seminar will be provided to 60 students in each of the ten selected school. This will be done through classes with the aid of films (video tapes), projectors display, lectures, and fliers. This will be done in two cicles.
Circle one will be the seminars on the importance of conserving the environment, effects of deforestation, benefits of afforestation and reforestation will be provided to all 600 students by moving at all schools starting with one after the other until all are completed for the first three months, that will be from July 2016 to September 2016, where at each school the seminars will take 3 days.

Circle two will involve the seminars on how to prepare nurseries and seedlings and how to plant trees. It will be based on how to prepare nurseries and seedling and how to plant trees from October 2016 to December 2016.

6.1.2 Activity two will involve surveying and identification of water sources for watering of seedlings and later for watering the planted trees in all ten schools and identification of the sample of farms (school farms) that will be used on practical demonstration during the second phase. This activity will take six months, from January 2017 to June 2017.

6.1.3 Activity three; In schools farms where there is no water sources there will be a simple sub-project of drilling wells where possible, making the system of tapping and storing the rain water in tanks during the rain season. Also there will be connection of the water pipes from the near water pipelines if it will be possible, there will be identification of near water sources which will allow the transportation of water in trailers and store in tanks at school farms.
PHASE TWO
6.2 In this phase the aim is to conduct the application in practical of the theoretical knowledge that will have been provided in the first phase. It will involve guidance of 60 students in each school of the selected schools to prepare seedlings on nurseries, to prepare farms and plant those seedlings prepared on the farms. The phase will take the duration of two years, from July 2017 to March 2019.
In this practical phase, the focus is the preparation of seeds which are relevant to geographical condition of Kwimba district, preparation of relevant agricultural inputs, like fertilizers or manure, preparation of seedlings. Also there will be preparation of field areas or farms (shamba darasa) including preparation of holes and planting of seedlings on the farms. These activities will be done by the students guided by the two project runners in each school. The activities will be done as follows.
The project in this phase will be done in two terms of one year in each. At the first year of the phase there will be the first term that will take one year in which one acre will be planted trees in each school. The next year one more acre will be planted trees and this will be the second term in this phase.  The first term will commence on July 2017 to March 2018.

6.2.1  Activity four will involve preparation of seeds that will take one month, July 2017. There will be collection of seeds which are relevant to the geographical condition of the area concerned.  To meet this criterion, students will be involved in the collection of seeds from good trees to be grown.
Sorting of the collected seeds will be done so as to remain with those which are good in a given condition that they can grow. Identification of good seeds will be well kept in good condition ready to be grown in the nurseries. The involvement of students in collection of seeds of familiar trees in their area aims at maintaining the natural vegetation which is in most cases perished in many areas.

6.2.2 Activity five: after seeds have been prepared there will be preparation of field schools areas ready for nurseries to be near the farms, which will be done in August. This will be done in each of the ten schools each with 60 students and two supervisors from project stakeholders. It will involve preparation of seedling and preparation of holes in the farms ready for seedling to be grown.

6.2.3 Activity six will be preparing and caring of seedling that will take 3 months, starting from September to November 2017. This will involve preparing the nurseries and poor seedling and watering the nurseries. This will also involve taking care of the seedlings on the nurseries. After one month the young seedlings will be replanted in the plastic bags special for storing and growing development before they are reach the age to be taken to the farm to be planted.
6.2.4 Activity seven while the watering continues to the last month of December, there will be preparation of the farms to plant trees’ seedlings for the whole month of December. This will involve slashing of unwanted bushes and grasses. After then there will be digging of the holes that will be used for planting trees. The distance between holes will be 3 meters by 3 meters. In the beginning of January there will be mixing of manure with the soil in the holes ready to plant the trees in the holes.
6.2.5 Activity eight involve planting the seedlings, that will include the two project runners and students from all ten selected schools, where the students will be shown how to plant seedlings on the holes in the field schools (shamba darasa) and students will continue to plant seedlings in the holes in the field schools. This activity will take three months from January 2018 to March 2018. These activities of planting seedlings will go to gather with the watering to ensure the further growth of seedlings.
After the first term in this phase there will be another term in which the program in first term will be repeated for the next year of this phase, after the short break of three month. In the process of planting trees in this phase will also take one acre in each school. This will commence on July 2018 to March 2019. In this phase will involve fully cooperation of students because they acquired this knowledge at the first term of phase two.
6.2.6 Activity nine will involve preparation of seeds which will take one month, July 2018. There will be collection of seeds for the second term of phase II. That seeds should be relevant to the geographical condition of the area concerned.  To meet this criterion, students will be involved in the collection seeds from good trees to be grown.
Sorting of the collected seed will be done so as to remain with those which are good in a given condition in that they can grow. Identification of good seeds will be well kept in good condition ready to be grown in the nurseries. The involvement of students in collection of seeds of familiar trees in their area aims at maintaining the natural vegetation which is in most cases perished in many areas.

6.2.7 Activity ten will involve preparation of field schools areas for the second term ready for nurseries to be across farms, which will be done August. This will be done in each of the ten schools each with 60 students and two supervisors from project stakeholders. It will involve preparation of seedling and preparation of holes in the farms ready for seedling to be grown.

6.2.8 Activity eleven will involve preparing and caring of seedling for the second term of the project that will take 4 months, starting from August to November 2018. This will involve preparation of the nurseries and pour seedling and watering the nurseries. This will also involve taking care of the seedlings which are on the nurseries. After one month the young seedlings will be replanted in the plastic bags special for storing and growing development before they are reach the age to be taken to the farm to be planted.

6.2.9  Activity twelve while the watering continues to the last month of December, there will be preparation of the farms to plant trees’ seedlings for the whole month of December. This will involve slashing of unwanted bushes and grasses. After then there will be digging of the holes that will be used for planting trees. The distance between holes will be 3 meters by 3 meters. In the beginning of January there will be mixing of manure with the soil in the holes ready to replant the trees seedlings in the halls.

6.2.10 Activity thirteen involve planting the seedlings, that will include the two project runners and students from all ten selected schools, where the students will be shown how to plant seedlings on the holes in the field schools (shamba darasa) and students will continue to plant seedlings in the holes in the field schools. This activity will take three months from January 2018 to March 2018. These activities of planting seedlings will go to gather with the watering to ensure the further growth of seedlings.
PHASE THREE
6.3 The aim of this phase is to conduct practical activities particularly conserving the planted trees which are already planted in the farm. The activities that are going to be conducted in this phase are security against venders like animals and insects, weeding, pruning, watering where necessary, replacement of died trees, application of pesticides and mulching. The phase will have the duration of two years. Activities are explained as follows depending on their description with consideration when needed. These activities are going simultaneously.

6.3.1 Activity fourteen will involve security on protecting the planted trees in the field. Both newly and the already planted trees in the field (seedlings) will encircled with sticks against invaders. Generally, field of the school selected (shamba darasa) will always be made out of reach of any domestic animals and any tree cutting. Posters will be put for notification, both school and community of the area surrounding the field will be involved.

6.3.2 Activity fifteen will involve weeding which will be done whenever trees farms are infected by weeds. Students will be involved in doing this task. This will go hand in hand with light digging around a plant for easy penetration of air and water for rapid growth of the plants.

6.3.3 Activity seventeen will involve replacement of dead trees that will always be done following the death of any planted trees in the farm. Students will be guided to indentify the dead trees and replant those trees.

6.3.4 Activity eighteen will involve pruning of the growing trees. Soon after the trees have started to grow student will demonstrated on how to prune the trees’ branches which technically should be pruned. Thus students will prune all trees that are needed to be pruned as needed in whole of this phase.
6.3.5 Activity nineteen will be watering in which student will be demonstrated on how to water the trees where necessary especially when there is no rain. After that each student will be given about 20 trees to water and guide the planted trees.

6.3.6 Activity twenty will involve treatment of trees by using pesticide. The seedlings will need spraying of pesticides so as to prevent the insects which can affect the planted trees. This will be done during the time of the phase.

6.3.7 Activity twenty one will involve mulching. Students also will be demonstrated mulching by spreading leaves of trees under seedlings in the farm so as to preserve moisture in the soil. This will help in preventing the loss of water in the soil for seedling growth.

6.3.8 All the above activities in phase three will end on March 2020, the rest three month April to June 2020 will be used for project termination, evaluation and reporting to the office of vice president, at the department of environmental conservation.

8  PROJECT OUTCOMES
If the project will be implemented as proposed there will be several outcomes. These are divided into two, approximate outcomes and underlying outcomes as the following.

8.1  Approximate/immediate outcomes
1. About 600 hundred students will have acquired the knowledge provided through seminars on the importance of planting forest for environmental conservation.

2. 600 secondary school students will have acquired the knowledge, values and skills on how to prepare nurseries, seedlings and plant trees through practical manner.

3. 600 students will have acquired knowledge on how to care the planted trees against the invaders like animals and insects.

4. Each of the ten selected secondary schools will have not less than two hectors of planted trees (small forests).

5. About 21 youths graduates from SAUT will be employed in the project as the project runners for five years.

8.2   Underlying/Indirect Outcomes
1.  The project will ensure the forest products such as building materials through harvesting planted trees.

2. The increase of 600 environmental conservationists through training on afforestation and reforestation since they have trained during the project implementation. These are the one who are expected to spread the values, attitude and knowledge on environmental conservation through planting trees.

3. Environmental conservation through the twenty acres of planted trees in the selected areas.

4. Good climatic conditions as the planted trees will ensure favorable climate.

5. Modification of scenery of selected areas, the presence of forest will change the present outlook of bare land and add beauty of areas and solve the problem of soil erosion.

6. Forests will attract new species; the forests will be used as habitats for species such as animals, birds and insects. These species in turn can attract also other economic activities such as bee keeping and lumbering.

7. Forests will help in restoration and maintenance of water sources. Presence of trees will help to conserve the catchment areas to ensure the community with constant water supply.
